This week the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced that it measured carbon dioxide levels at over 400 parts per million in our atmosphere. Scientists say the last time CO2 levels were this high was three to five million years ago, when the planet as a whole was much hotter. This new level follows a trend of rising CO2 levels since the NOAA began measuring in 1958. Read more about the news from the BBC or NY Times.
This new threshold level of CO2 emissions is symbolic, pointing to the need for widespread effort to slow our rising emissions.
