Tar Sands Activism 10/27/11

Join us for the next event in our “Movement Builders and Shakers Forum” with a special talk and letter-writing workshop. According to NASA’s top climate scientist, developing a tar sands oil pipeline from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico would mean “essentially game over” for the climate. President Obama is currently considering whether to approve the construction of a 1700 mile Keystone XL Pipeline that would carry dirty tar sands oil generating millions of tons of greenhouse gas pollution. After a historic two-week sit-in at the White House in August, 1252 activists were arrested in non-violent acts of civil disobedience. Pressure on the Obama administration continues with State Department Hearings and more mass mobilizations and civil disobedience. Come hear Rainforest Action Network Executive Director Becky Tarbotton speak about the threat tar sands pose, the incredible activism that’s already taken place, and how you can engage on the issue. After her talk, stay for a letter-writing workshop with author Ann Manheimer, a freelance writer and teacher. She’ll talk briefly about strategies for effective letters – where to send them and how to write them – and will help letter-writers compose and edit. Bring your writing implements – laptops if you have them, or stationery & postage. We’ll send letters that night to local papers, regional leaders, and President Obama. Cosponsored by Transition Berkeley.
