Bolani started as a mission for our founder, Nazifa Sidiq. After war broke out in her home country of Afghanistan in the 1970s, her family sought a new life in the US; first in New York City where she worked in fast food, and later San Francisco where she started the family. After noticing her culture wasn’t represented in the US food scene on either coast, she decided to establish Bolani to provide healthy Afghan food for people to enjoy. Bolani is a thin flatbread filled with vegetables like spinach, pumpkin or potato. It’s a dish very close to her heart, as her grandmother had showed her to make, from vegetables she grew in her own garden.
Nazie’s business has since taken off. While it can be found at many Bay Area farmers’ markets and independent grocery stores, each flatbread is still handmade.
