CALFRESH EBT AT FARMERS’ MARKETS
Katie EBT for Web Eating healthy is easier when you have access to fresh, affordable choices. And now, many farmers’ markets across the state accept CalFresh EBT cards and other benefits.

WHAT’S A FARMERS’ MARKET?

Farmers’ markets are family-friendly, open-air marketplaces where California farmers sell fruits and vegetables, fresh baked goods, jams, juices, olive oils, yogurt and cheeses, fresh fish, pickles, and more—right in your community.

WHAT IS CALFRESH EBT?

Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), or CalFresh in California, are no longer issued paper Food Stamps. Instead, they are issued an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card where recipients access their food benefits electronically by swiping their card at the point of sale. You can find the markets nearest you that accept your CalFresh benefits by looking for the blue and green pins above in the map.

HOW DOES EBT AT FARMERS’ MARKETS WORK?

In order to accept CalFresh EBT cards, farmers’ markets typically establish a central Point of Sale (POS) model, allowing the market to sell EBT scrip to customers at a central point in the market (usually an information booth). The customer then spends their EBT scrip with any eligible food producer in the market

WHAT IS MARKET MATCH?

The Market Match program is a statewide CalFresh incentive program offering additional money to CalFresh EBT cardholders (and sometimes those receiving WIC, Senior FMNP, and SSI benefits) who use their card to buy fresh fruits and vegetables. See participating markets (above in green) for details.

WHAT IS WIC?

WIC is a federally-funded health and nutrition program for women, infants, and children. WIC helps families by providing checks for purchasing healthy supplemental foods. You can find the markets that accept your WIC benefits on the map above.

There are two food benefit programs supported by WIC and the other is supported by the Department of Food and Agriculture for seniors. All three may be spent at some farmers’ markets:

WIC and Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP)
FMNP is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and began in the 1990s to provide fresh, nutritious, locally grown fruits and vegetables from farmers’ markets to low-income families and seniors. Each eligible family receives $20 in vouchers to purchase fresh fruits, vegetables, and cut herbs at WIC-approved farmers’ markets in California during the season, from May through November.

WIC Fruit & Vegetable Checks
In October 2009, WIC Food Benefits were changed to include produce items and the WIC Fruit & Vegetable check was introduced. Farmers at select farmers’ markets throughout the state are authorized to accept these checks.

The Farmers’ Market Finder can tell you which market accepts WIC FMNP, WIC Fruit and Veggie Checks and Senior FMNP or check with your local farmers’ market for details.
