Zero Waste Systems Change Rooted in Community, Accountability, and Real Recycling
The Ecology Center’s Zero Waste programs drive change by rethinking how materials are used, recovered, and valued, linking everyday recycling and education with broader systems transformation. Since pioneering curbside recycling, we have demonstrated what a mission-driven, community-based model can achieve by prioritizing waste reduction at the source, setting clear standards for what belongs in the bin, and ensuring that collected materials are responsibly managed and returned to high-quality end uses.
Our curbside recycling program is paired with robust education and outreach that helps residents make informed decisions about what they consume and discard. Through clear guidance, resources, and community engagement, we work to reduce contamination, prevent waste before it starts, and build a culture of responsibility around materials.
Beyond local implementation, we actively shape the policies and systems that define recycling and waste management. We advocate for stronger standards, corporate accountability, and upstream solutions that reduce single-use materials and shift responsibility from consumers to producers. Through collaboration with partners and networks, we challenge extractive, profit-driven waste systems and advance models rooted in environmental health, transparency, and community benefit.
Grounded in a zero waste vision, our work moves beyond managing waste to eliminating it, building a circular economy that conserves resources, reduces pollution, and supports healthier, more equitable communities.
