Food & Farming

The Ecology Center is actively working to create and promote an alternative food system that is based on the values of environmental protection, justice, and access to healthy, sustainably produced food for all.
About Food & Farming
About the program

Healthy, sustainably produced food for all.

The Ecology Center’s Food & Farming programs create change by transforming how food is grown, distributed, and accessed, linking local action with statewide systems change. We operate farmers’ markets that serve as essential community infrastructure, connecting regional farmers directly with shoppers, supporting small- and mid-sized producers, and expanding equitable access to fresh, healthy food through CalFresh and Market Match.

Beyond the market, we work to strengthen the broader food system through partnerships, training, and policy advocacy. Through leadership in statewide networks and coalitions, we support farmers’ market operators, advance standards and best practices, and advocate for policies that invest in local agriculture, increase food access, and build climate resilience.

Grounded in environmental protection, justice, and community well-being, our approach centers those most impacted by food insecurity and climate change. By piloting solutions locally and scaling them through policy and partnerships, we are building a more equitable, regenerative food system that supports farmers, nourishes communities, and sustains the land for generations to come.

What We Do

Building a more equitable, regenerative food system that supports farmers, nourishes communities, and sustains the land for generations to come.

Berkeley Farmers’ Markets

The Berkeley Farmers’ Markets connect local farmers and community members with fresh, seasonal food. By supporting small farms and expanding access through programs like CalFresh and Market Match, the markets help build a more resilient local food system.

Market Match

Market Match is California’s healthy food incentive program that matches customers’ CalFresh benefits at farmers’ markets and other farm-direct sites across the state.

California Alliance of Farmers’ Markets

A statewide coalition of farmers' markets and affiliates working together to strengthen California's farm-direct marketplace. The Alliance offers professional development, market management best practices, policy representation in Sacramento and Washington DC, and automatic membership in the national Farmers' Market Coalition.

Farmer’s Market Finder

An interactive map of California farmers' markets, searchable by location and filterable by CalFresh EBT acceptance, Market Match availability, WIC, and day of week. Maintained by the Ecology Center to connect shoppers with fresh, local food — and help markets reach the customers who need them most.

Farmers’ Market EBT Toolkit

We assist farmers' market operators and community partners in establishing, implementing, and promoting CalFresh EBT access at farmers' markets and other direct-marketing locations.
