Residential Lighting for Home Owners, Renters and Designers

Thursday | March 20, 2014 | 6:30 pm — 8:00 pm

Napa County Historical Society | 1219 1st Street, Napa, CA 94559

If you don’t like paying high electric costs for incandescent light bulbs or if you do not like compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), come to this presentation in person or through the potential internet, live or recorded. As you may already know, the federal government has eliminated some common incandescent light bulbs and will eliminate more, because incandescent bulbs are much better heaters than light sources. For example, before 100W incandescent bulbs were banned, two of them were used in Easy Bake Ovens. Halogen and halogen infrared lamps, which are improved versions of incandescents will be discussed. Some of the new CFLs are much better than ones just a few years ago. There are also some name brand screw-in LEDs around $10 or less. There are other LEDs, which can dim and change color tones, which are fun to use and can improve circadian rhythms, leading to better alertness and sleep, and also improve mood and performance. For example caffeine has a four hour half life, so even one heavy duty coffee at noon, may delay sleep that night, the effect from light goes away in two hours. Some of the new energy efficient LED products can be controlled by cell phone apps. What do you think has more mercury, a CFL or a can of tuna? How to recycle CFLs will be mentioned. Exterior lighting will also be included. Even before this class, you could watch this video:
