Growing Food 101: Getting Your Garden Started

Growing Food 101: Getting Your Garden Started is the first class of a three part series that spans three months (one class each month). Session 1: Getting Started will cover food safety, soil structure, building raised vegetable beds, and setting up irrigation systems and watering strategies. You’ll learn everything you need to know to structure your edible garden for success.

This class can stand alone or you can sign up for all three classes. If you’d like to sign up for all three at once, please call the Biofuel Oasis or come into our store to pay; we’ll give you a $15 discount on the total ($5 off each class)! Instructors’ Biographies:

Stefani Bittner is the owner of Homestead Design Collective, a San Francisco Bay Area landscape design firm focused on creating beautiful gardens that provide harvest. Homestead provides design, installation, and full-service organic maintenance, harvesting, bee keeping, floristry and composting services. Homestead Design Collective recently designed and installed the new test gardens for Sunset Magazine. Stefani is the co-author of The Beautiful Edible Garden (Ten Speed Press, 2013) and Harvest: Unexpected Projects Using 47 Extraordinary Plants (Ten Speed Press, 2017). Her work has been featured in San Francisco Chronicle, The Wall Street Journal, Vogue, Sunset Magazine, Food & Wine, Time Magazine, Modern Farmer, and more.

Sierra Zackzewski is a Lead Edible Gardener with Homestead Design Collective. Previously, she farmed for the French Laundry, which evoked her passion for the plant to plate experience, rare plant varietals, and unique growing techniques. She is a third generation orchid grower from Southern California, and she spent her childhood working alongside her father and grandfather to learn the art of orchid growing. Today, she is a modern day homesteader based in Napa, where she lives with five beloved chickens and grows most of her own organic produce.

Stefani and Sierra will co-teach the first gardening class and Sierra will take on the next two.

A Three-Part Series. $35 per class, or $90 for all three. Session 1: Getting Started. We’ll cover food safety, soil structure, building raised vegetable beds, and setting up irrigation systems and watering strategies. You’ll learn everything you need to know to structure your edible garden for success. Session 2: Planting Your Garden. We’ll dive into soil preparation, perennial and annual plants, growing by seed, growing by transplant, plant placement, and fertilization. You’ll leave with all of the tools to grow an abundance of food. Session 3: Maintenance. We’ll discuss how you can make the most of your garden for a lifetime to come. We’ll cover maintenance, secession planting, organic pest management, trouble-shooting water issues, harvesting, and maximizing food and enjoyment from your edible garden. We’ll also talk about incorporating bees, backyard chickens, and pets into an edible garden space.
