As a volunteer-run organization, Phat Beets provides equal, affordable access to fresh, pesticide-free or organic, local produce, collected for the North Oakland community. They strive to connect small farmers and farmers of color with urban communities by creating farm stands and a “Beet Box” CSA, offering senior and low-income pricing. They work with youth, sampling organic produce, generating discussions of health and wellness. Youth are encouraged to take on leadership roles in operating Phat Beets’ markets, from cultivation to creative vision.
They have lots of short and long term volunteer opportunities with the farmers markets, packing CSA boxes, free farm stands outside schools and medical clinics, and community garden. For volunteering info email Heather Leu at heather@phatbeetsproduce.org
