State Bill 405 introduced at the state legislature this last week would follow the lead of many local governments in banning single use plastic bags. A statewide ban would benefit our marine ecosystems, which all flow together into the ocean. Plastic bags contribute significantly to pollution of local waterways, and to the cost of maintaining stormwater and waste systems. And, as this article points out, business associations like the California Grocers Association are supportive, because the current patchwork of bans creates competitive disadvantages for members operating in a ban-border area.
