Berkeley City Council Considers Sunday Streets Tuesday, 7/17/12

The Ecology Center is excited to get involved with Sunday Streets Berkeley, a transformative community event that is identified as an Action Item in Berkeley’s Climate Action Plan. At the Berkeley City Council meeting on July 17, councilmembers will have the opportunity to endorse the City’s sponsorship of Sunday Streets Berkeley. Come show your support, or call or email your councilmember in advance to urge their support for Sunday Streets! Councilmember contact info can be found here.

At the July 17 meeting, councilmembers will have the opportunity to contribute funding to the event. The first time cost of this event is $50,000, and we’re half way there. We’re hoping that we’ll get the support of the entire Council through discretionary funding contributions. Mayor Bates has pledged $4,000 toward the costs of closing the street, staffing intersections, putting in barricades, notifying neighbors, fees and permits, putting up signage, promotion, set-up and clean-up.

Sunday Streets Berkeley is being organized by a working committee including the Office of Mayor Tom Bates, Councilmember Jesse Arreguin, Livable Berkeley, the Downtown Berkeley Association, the North Shattuck Association, the East Bay Bicycle Coalition, and the Ecology Center.
