This popular course will give you both the knowledge and practice you need to tackle your own straw bale construction project.  The instructor, a leading expert in straw bale construction and a building inspector in Sonoma County, will teach you the latest innovations in this constantly evolving building technique. Course topics include:

  •  Design for straw bale homes
  • Basic straw bale construction methods
  • Foundation systems
  • Framing for windows and doors
  • Roofing materials and roof-bearing assemblies
  • Interior details
  • Building to code

You will help build a small load-bearing structure, including foundation and roofing.  In addition, you will have the opportunity to mix and apply various plasters.

Join us to learn how to grow your own mushrooms. This class will cover information on the many roles of Fungi and its importance in today’s world.

We will discuss basic propagation techniques using resources found at home, outdoor/indoor cultivation, and possibilities of mycoremediation of polluted soil.  Each student will receive one bag of inoculated mushroom plugs with which to get started. This class will provide the basis of knowledge for growing gourmet mushrooms. If you have access to a good amount of oak logs, cut within 2 weeks to 6 months, please let us know if you would be willing to donate several cuttings and/or woodchips.
