Want to maximize your urban edible production, sustainably? Join us for a hands-on, how-to workshop on growing edibles year round. Lori Caldwell, Master Composter and Bay-Friendly Educator, will provide you with the nuts and bolts on designing for edibles, building healthy soil, choosing companion plants, planting seasonally, rotating crops for higher yield, and harvesting. There will be a focus on spring/summer loving edibles like tomatoes, carrots, bush and pole beans, lettuce and more. Each participant will receive an Edible Reader – an indispensable reference – discount nursery coupons and detailed gardening handouts. There will be a drawing for gardening gifts at the end of the workshop.

Permaculture is a philosophy and system of building, farming, gardening and landscaping conceived by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren in the 1970s in the wake of environmental problems left behind by previous centuries of colonization and more recent industrialization. Join landscape designer Jeremy Watts at Ploughshares to learn about simple permaculture concepts that can be used in your garden to improve the health of plants, increase food crop yields, and ultimately reduce labor. Topics covered will include: sheet mulching, resource optimization, functional planting, using diversity to create a healthy garden, and productive low maintenance landscaping.
