Writers and Journalists

Terrain relies on smart, experienced journalists and freelance writers. If you have an interest in writing environmental news, pitch us a story. It must be timely and based in Northern California. Use our search feature to see if we’ve already covered your story idea; if so, find something else. Send your story pitch to kara@ecologycenter.org.

Research and Tips

Do you have story ideas or expertise you’d love to share with Terrain? Help us find regional stories and sources; wow us with your specialized knowledge. Biotech expertise welcome. Email mary@ecologycenter.org.

Photography

We need illustrations, graphics, and photographers to shoot on assignment. Cover shots or designs $50; inside shots or designs get photo credits. Email mary@ecologycenter.org.

Internships

Terrain no longer offers a internship program; however, we accept pitches from young or up-and-coming writers looking to get clips published. We offer guidance in story development throughout the editorial process. If you believe you can write environmental news in a vivid style, if you can look beyond the obvious, if you think soapboxes are for ranters and not writers, send an email with your resume and any clips you may have to kara@ecologycenter.org. Tell us why you want to write for Terrain.

Distribution

Want to see Terrain in your neighborhood? Come to our office at 2530 San Pablo Avenue in Berkeley and pick up a box of Terrains. West Contra Costa County, South Bay, and Central Valley distribution is especially needed.
