Exposing Dow Chemical’s Greenwashing

Recently, the Ecology Center held a Regenerating Solutions Salon on the topic of greenwashing. Here’s an example of a company’s greenwashing attempt, and a great response to counter it!

When a PR firm working for Dow Chemical contacted Anna LappĂ©, author of Diet for a Hot Planet: The Climate Crisis at the End of Your Fork and What You Can Do About It and co-founder of the Small Planet Institute, asking her to contribute a 60-second video for its virtual conference on water sustainability, she happily obliged. But the company wasn’t too pleased with Anna’s message: that toxic chemicals sprayed on lawns and farms and used in everyday products are one of the greatest threats to water sustainability–and that Dow, as the nation’s largest chemical producer, holds much of the responsibility for this problem.

After Dow rejected her video contribution, the Small Planet Institute launched its own website, A Future We Create, showcasing the video and exposing Dow’s latest greenwashing campaign. The website also highlights videos from organizations that are fighting for corporate accountability and are, right now, working to create a future in which everyone has access to clean water.
