• If the oil generated by all do-it-yourself oil changers in America were collected and re-refined, it would provide enough motor oil for over 50 million cars each year. This would reduce our dependence on imported oil, help reduce our trade deficit, and provide jobs.

• Re-refined oil is equal in quality to virgin oil. Motor oil doesn’t break down, it simply gets dirty. Ask your oil retailer for re-refined oil with the American Petroleum Institute (API) seal. Buying recycled is an important part of making recycling work.

WHY RECYCLE USED OIL?

• Used motor oil can contain toxic substances such as benzene,lead, zinc, and cadmium.

• One pint of oil can produce a slick of approximately one acre on the surface of water.

• Dumping used oil sends the oil and its contaminants into ground and surface water. Used oil is the largest single source of oil pollution (over 40%) in our nation's waterways.

DO clean up spills with sawdust, kitty litter, rags or newspaper. Place them in plastic bags and take them to an Alameda County Household Hazardous Waste drop-off center. Call 510-670-6460 for the location nearest you.

DON’T mix toxic substances such as antifreeze, solvents, transmission or brake fluids with used oil. Keep these separate and dispose of these and other household hazardous wastes through Alameda County Household Hazadous Waste. Call 510-670-6460 for a list of drop-off locations.

DON’T place used oil into household garbage, recycling containers or commercial dumpsters. Don't place the used oil recycl-ing kits out on the curb, the City does not provide service for pickup of the kits.

DON’T pour used oil into the sewer, storm drain or onto the ground. It is illegal and punishable by a $5000 fine.

HOW TO CHANGE & RECYCLE

Please consult your car owner's manual for detailed oil change instructions.

1. Unscrew the cap from the used oil recycling container and place the container under the engine oil pan.
2. Allow the used oil to drain from your car into the oil recycling kit.
3. Screw the cap tightly onto the used oil recycling container. If you are changing your oil filter, follow the directions included on the filter.
4. Drain any oil left in the filter by puncturing its dome end and turning the filter upside down in the used oil recycling container for a minimum of 12 hours to remove all of the oil.
5. Place the drained filter into the used oil recycling kit bag and seal tightly. Don't throw your used filters into the trash. Used oil filters are considered hazardous waste unless managed properly.
6. Take the used oil recycling kit with the used oil and the oil filter to your nearest certified used oil collection center. For a list of certified collection center locations, call 510-525-1630.

When you change your oil, take the used oil recycling kit to a certified used oil collection center. These centers accept used oil from the public at no charge during the hours that the center is open and pay you 16 cents per gallon for your used oil.
