Farmers Market Assistant Manager—On Call

Summary of Responsibilities:

The Farmers’ Market Assistant Manager works onsite at the Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday market as an assistant to the Market Manager. The Assistant Manager also works in the Ecology Center office providing operational and administrative support on Mondays, or Wednesdays. The job is an on-call, as needed position.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Set up the farmers market, including closing of the street and parking in vendors
  • Set up Ecology Center booth at market
  • Interact with customers to sell merchandise or answer questions at market
  • Observe safe operating practices and comply with organizational safety policies
  • Ensure that all market monies received are handled safely following established cash-handling procedures
  • Assist in the preparation of market deposits within 24 hours of receipt of funds

Preferred Qualifications:

  • The ability to set up a farmers’ market booth efficiently and in visually appealing manner
  • The proven ability to work independently and exercise good judgment in a variety of environments and situations
  • The skills to build the farmers’ markets as successful businesses while furthering the Ecology Center’s environmental and community mission and to make it all look fun
  • Possess broad knowledge of sustainable food systems and other environmental issues
  • Competency with word processing, spreadsheet, database and graphic computer applications in a Mac computer environment
  • Ability and enthusiasm for developing and maintaining relationships with participants including farmers, vendors, customers, neighbors and other members of the public
  • Demonstrable ability to effectively resolve conflicts
  • The ability and willingness to “police” and enforce rules with both vendors and the public
  • Experience working for and commitment to building sustainable food systems
  • Flexibility and creativity, ability to “think on your feet” and find appropriate solutions to unique challenges
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills

Desired Qualifications [optional]:

  • Current CA driver’s license preferred
  • First Aid and CPR Certification (or willingness to become certified) preferred
  • Conversational Spanish fluency preferred


This is an on-call, hourly position.


$14.00 per hour; This position is non-benefitted.
