Toxics Link was formally set up in March 1996 by a group of like-minded NGOs, voluntary organizations and individuals concerned about toxic pollution in India. Our goal is to develop an information exchange mechanism that will strengthen campaigns against toxics pollution, help push industries towards cleaner production and link groups working on toxics issues into a National Toxics Movement in India. We currently have an informal network of over 350 members, individuals and organizations that subscribe to our mission statement:
"We are a group of people working together for environmental justice and freedom from toxics. We have taken it upon ourselves to collect and share both information about the sources and dangers of poisons in our environment and bodies, and information about clean and sustainable alternatives for India and rest of the world."
Through sustained information dissemination and sharing of campaign strategies with individuals and groups, Toxics Link has been able to create a wide network of NGOs, grassroots groups and individuals working on toxic issues around the country. Toxics Link's three information outreach nodes in Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai have been actively interacting with the groups and individuals in different regions of the country to address the toxics issues that the particular constituency has identified as important and forming a link between different constituencies.
Most often groups working on similar issues, being geographically set apart, work in isolation. They are not aware of each other's campaigns and struggles, and therefore are unable to draw from each other's collective strength. Toxics Link strives to link these groups and individuals with each other and experts working on the issue to form a national network against toxics pollution.
