Neal Gottlieb, founder of Three Twins Ice Cream, served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the old city of Taroudant Morocco from 2002 – 2003. His tenure in Morocco was cut short when the war in Iraq led to the evacuation of the program, prompting Neal to return to his beloved San Francisco Bay Area. Though he had been accepted to business school, Neal decided that his money would be better spent by actually starting a green business. Thus, his work on Three Twins began. After taking a business planning class at the Renaissance Entrepreneurship Center in San Francisco to guide him along in writing his business plan, Neal began searching for a location for his first scoop shop. In 2005, Three Twins opened for business, with a retail location in San Rafael. At this time, Neal didn’t have a single employee. He made ice cream in the morning, ran the shop all day, cleaned the shop at night, and did paperwork afterwards. Since then, the business has grown tremendously. Three Twins now has a production facility in Petaluma, scoop shops in San Rafael, Larkspur, Napa and San Francisco, and a thriving wholesale business supplying Bay Area restaurants and retail locations throughout the United States. In addition, Three Twins has sold pints and ice cream sandwiches at the Berkeley Farmers’ Markets since 2006. Since the beginning, Neal has made charitable giving central to his business practices. Three Twins is a proud member of 1% For the Planet, through which they donate 1% of their sales to organizations like the Marin Agricultural Land and the Rainforest Action Network.
