Understory Planting: Making Trees a Priority

Wednesday | July 26, 2017 | 2:00 pm — 4:00 pm

Our existing and mature trees are an invaluable resource. Cutting down a mature tree today is an obvious way to get rid of it, but did you know that trying to design around mature trees can kill them just as surely? Or on the flip-side, we can kill our new landscape project by installing it in a place and with plants selected that can’t deal with being under a nearby tree.

We will look at:

The reasons mature and existing trees are so challenging to work under
Setting mature and existing trees as the priority in landscape design
Tools for understanding the plant communities in your region
The specific challenges for 4 common bay area tree genera (Oaks, Pines, Eucalyptus, and Redwoods)
Water use under these trees (basic, not in depth)
A few plants to consider under each of the 4 tree types
