Community Event

Tour Registration Open: Mexico — Celebrating Guelaguetza and Food Sovereignty in Oaxaca (July 18-26)

This event has passed.

On this tour, we will explore the cultural and historical context of Oaxaca’s food traditions, while also hearing firsthand from peasants and activists working to preserve, defend and strengthen Mexican food systems in the face of numerous threats to rural livelihoods and ecosystems. We will learn about the dangers of environmental degradation, mining, privatization, tourism, trade liberalization, out-migration and contamination of native seeds by imported genetically modified organisms (GMOs). We will also witness how indigenous and peasant organizations, communities and NGOs are combating these forces while working to strengthen local food systems in both the countryside and urban areas.
