St. Francis Square: Celebrating 50 Years of Cooperative Living

This event has passed.

In 1963, the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) and the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) launched a 300-unit affordable housing project in the Western Addition, an area which went through massive redevelopment in the Sixties. The ILWU’s vision was to build a moderate-priced housing community for working-class families, which would be controlled by the residents and represent all races and groups in the community. Many of the original families, now three generations, still live there. Learn about how “The Square” continues to embody the original vision and thrives today. Historical photographs, memorabilia and interviews celebrate the community and its residents.
