Port Chicago History Program for Young Adults

This event has passed.

Author: Steve Sheinkin’s new book, The Port Chicago 50, written for young adult audience, explores the tragic explosion that occurred on July 17, 1944, at the segregated Navy base in Concord, CA. The tragedy killed 320 men, many of whom were African American, critically injured many more, and changed history forever. Several hundred survivors refused to go back to work until unsafe and unfair conditions at the docks were addressed. When the dust settled, fifty men were charged with mutiny, facing decades in jail and even execution.
