Mushroom Dyes with Alissa Allen
Exploring Local Mushroom Dyes
Every region has its own special palette of natural dyes. In this 4-hour hands-on workshop, we will explore the permanent, color rich pigments found in local wild mushrooms. Using 10-15 species of fungi, we will produce a full spectrum of color samples – about 20 colors in all!
In addition to extracting mushroom pigments, we will talk about safe handling, ethical harvest and mushroom habitats, and go over basic terminology used in mushroom identification. Participants receive a handout that includes a brief history of mushroom dyes, the procedures used for mordanting and dyeing, and a customized guide to the best local dye mushrooms. Everyone takes home a record card with samples and recipes from class.
Don’t miss this special opportunity to learn more about the brilliant natural dye sources found in your nearby forests! Limited to 20 students.
Location: A private ranch in Napa, CA. Location information will be sent in early January to registered students.
