An Ecological Demonstration Home in West Berkeley at the Site of Three Community Gardens

The Monthly, April 1999

A community group has contracted to purchase the vacant, deteriorated house at Peralta and Hopkins (1305 Hopkins), a site that adjoins the Karl Linn Community Garden. The group consists of community and environmental activists led by Berkeley City Councilmember Linda Maio. The group intends to convert the house into an ecological home and resource center and seeks 24 individuals and organizations who are willing to lend $10,000 each for a maximum of two years, at 5% simple interest. All loans will be secured together as the first deed of trust on the property.
