2007 Chávez Commemoration Home  •  Calendar of Events  •  Resources  •  Media

[Archives: 2007 | 2006 | 2005]

The Chavez Commemoration Planning Committee, with the support of the City of Berkeley, the Berkeley Unified School District and the University of California adopted a flexible “commemorative period” rather than a single day to honor César Chávez.  In that way many activities can happen in the city without competing with one another. The focus of the commemorative period is on “service to the community” as the best way to honor the labor leader and environmentalist. Last year the committee adopted a environmental justice theme. This entire strategy has been advanced as an experimental alternative to a school or city holiday.

Key Dates in 2007 Commemorative Period:

  • March 21: Spring Equinox (beginning of the planting season), International Earth Day
  • March 26-30: Spring Recess, U.C. Berkeley
  • March 30: BUSD César Chávez School Day of Service & Learning
  • March 31: César’s birthday
  • April 2-6: Spring Recess, BUSD
  • April 22: Earth Day
  • April 23: 14th anniversary of Cesar’s death

Manzi: The Adventures of Young César Chávez

By Jose Cruz Gonzalez
Can one young Mexican-American boy bring more justice into the world? This Active Arts Theatre production explores this question in a Bay Area premiere. The story of the late, great leader of America's migrant farm workers, as told by his sister, Rita, describes the hardships he and his family face when they lose their farm in Arizona and move to California to pick crops in the fields. The lessons the young Cesar learns about intolerance, injustice and the value of education inspire his lifelong quest to improve conditions for farm workers and bring dignity to their lives.

The talented musicians of the Longfellow Middle School Jazz Ensemble seek to learn about improvisation and the legacy of the jazz tradition. They will be performing and telling the history of jazz as it relates to the culture of struggle and unity. In that sense it will make a reference to how Jazz cuts across many cultures. For example, the labor leader, Cesar Chavez, who, having come of age in the 40’s big band (Zoot Suit) era, was a big fan of Jazz and had a large jazz collection. Also featured are the La Peña Children’s Chorus and the Lab Live Hip Hop Ensemble.
