residents a chance to continue Cesar Chavez’s work of environmental
and human health protection by getting rid of toxic waste materials
in their homes. The theme of this year’s Chavez Commemorative
Period is on Environmental Justice.
The City is sponsoring free collection of various household hazardous wastes. This is a chance for everyone to safely dispose of the following:
- Electronic waste, including computers, monitors, televisions, VCRs, telephones, printers, and other small appliances and equipment
- Fluorescent lighting, mercury thermometers and mercury thermostats (get a free digital thermometer in exchange)
- Expired and unused medicines (leave in original bottles)
- Household batteries including rechargables, silver “button” batteries, regular alkaline and other non-automotive batteries
Residents can also exchange the following:
- Incandescent light bulbs for a free compact fluorescent light bulb of equal light output
- Incandescent Holiday light strings (max. 3 per household) for new LED Holiday Lights
- Halogen Torchiere lamps for a new energy-efficient Torchiere
Residents can also pick up the following FREE materials:
- Free Lead Paint Removal Kit, including Tyvek “bunny” suit , masks and more
- Free Oil Change Kit plus a list of local oil recyclers
- Free Recycled Denim Pencils
- Dozens of environmental education brochures and flyers, including non-toxic gardening and cleaning information, energy conservation help, recycling information and much more.
