EcoHouse Tour, featuring a Chicken Raising Clinic with Linnea Due

Come get inspired and learn new skills at the EcoHouse with a tour of the site and gardens, followed by a clinic on raising chickens in your backyard. Begin at 10am with a tour of the Ecology Center's EcoHouse demonstration site and learn about simple improvements that can be made to green an urban home. The tour includes: Berkeley's first city-permitted wetland / greywater system, rainwater cistern and water catchment strategies, a living roof garden, organic permaculture gardening, solar panels, on-demand and solar water heater, natural and recycled building materials, native drought tolerant plants, mushroom cultivation, earthworks raingarden, drip irrigation, and more. Rounding out the day will be the afternoon Chicken Raising Clinic with Linnea Due. Want fresh eggs from your own hens? Compost for your garden? Keeping chickens is easier than you think--but it takes planning and a little upfront expense. Longtime poultry buff Linnea Due will give an overview of common assumptions and mistakes and will detail the good and the bad of a feathered flock in your backyard. This class is primarily for those considering chickens, but Linnea will also answer questions from those who have already taken the plunge. Note: The interior of the home is not included on this tour. Please specify when registering if ASL interpretation is requested, (at least 10 working days in advance).
Time: 10am - 1:30pm.
Location: EcoHouse, 1305 Hopkins St., (enter via garden entrance on Peralta), Berkeley.
Cost: $15 general, $10 EC members.
Info: 510-548-2220 x239, register@ecologycenter.org, http://www.ecologycenter.org/.
  Wheelchair accessible.
