UC Berkeley Reaches Climate Target – Two Years Ahead of Schedule

20131121ucberkeleyCongratulations to UC Berkeley, whose campus sustainability leaders announced this month that they had successfully met their target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by 2014! As they completed their audit for 2012, they found that they are now 7% below 1990 levels. How did they do it? They attributed the reductions to investments in building energy efficiency, alternative transportation, and purchasing power from renewable energy sources. Read their full press release on meeting this target here.

This is a victory not just for the UC, as we move ahead as a community to reach our city-wide climate goals. UC Berkeley Sustainability Manager Kira Stoll is active with the Berkeley Climate Action Coalition, which is a network of local organizations and community members joining together to implement the City of Berkeley’s ambitious, forty-year Climate Action Plan. We’re proud of their leadership as they surpass this target, and encourage students, staff and faculty to engage with BCAC to meet our bigger goal together.
